Evangeline's character Kate is a woman of 27 years old with a dark past and many secrets. At the beginning of the show, we discover that she was on the plane in order to be taken to the United States as a prisoner. She had been on the run from the law quite a while....
She fled to Australia where she then was captured by a marshal. We find out with falshbacks, she killed her real father because he abused her and her mother. Arrested by U.S. Marshal Edward Mars but escaped his custody when their car crashed after he swerved to avoid a black horse in the road. Visited her step-father, Sgt. Sam Austen, whom she thought would be supportive but who rejected her.
She caused the death of her childhood boyfriend, Tom, while resisting arrest and held up a New Mexico bank to recover her most cherished possession, a metal toy airplane that once belonged to Tom.
She felt in love with a policeman with she married. She left him after tell him the truth and she drugged him.
On the island, she's a confident and brave woman, bravely led the first exploration into the jungle and helped her fellows.The island pretty much made her its prisoner of some kind and she can't runaway. She can do an new start but her greatest problem is staying in one place for a long time. Only Jack and Hurley know that Kate is the prisoner and with te construction of the raft, she was exposed to the group as a fugitive by Sawyer after trying to steal his place on the raft
Kate seems to be attracted by Jack but by Sawyer too. Sawyer who has a trouble past too, they seem to understand each other.
